Mysterious Chinese? 神秘的中国人？

If you ask a Chinese person whether he thinks the Chinese are mysterious, the answer is probably no. But if you ask British people what they think of the Chinese, a lot of them may come up with the word mysterious. Why is this?

Apart from this view of the Chinese as mysterious, what other impressions do British people have of Chinese people as a whole?
